How to Make Smart Bets in Business

Image credit: Adam Gault Getty Images
Think through potential pitfalls and feel more secure regarding your investments and time.
Business is full of bets, especially where investing is concerned. If you’re interested in rolling the dice by purchasing a business, making an angel investment in a startup or even allocating your hard-earned money for your first employee, it’s important to know what makes a smart bet and how to protect yourself from a worst-case scenario. It’s worth stating that even deciding to go into a business of your own is a form of a bet, and merits the same type of background due-diligence.
This may require testing or gaining new knowledge, but a thorough understanding is critical, especially with glaring statistics regarding the failure rate for startups at a whopping 50 percent, according to Small Biz Genius. With statistics like these, there’s no way to ensure success. However, there are definitely ways to think through potential pitfalls in business models and feel more secure regarding where you invest your money and your time.

Verify demand through popularity

When it comes down to it, a sure bet in business is dependent upon how much customers want what it is that you’re selling. If you can do some market research and verify demand, you’re in good shape. Demand can come from the product’s value — such as its ability to solve a problem — or even from the person who’s selling the product, like a major celebrity who has established trust with millions of followers online.
This is one of the reasons why big influencers and celebrities can land lucrative book deals. Publishers know that whatever they release will fly off the shelves. The demand from their fanbase is verifiable. Take comedian Amy Schumer, who landed a rumored $8-10 million book deal for 2016's The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo.

Verify demand through testing

If a celebrity or big-time influencer isn’t included in the equation and you’re just trying to figure out how a product will sell, try a “market as if it were real” test approach. According to Ron Rule from the Entrepreneur’s Handbook, this is because “the only way to truly know if someone is going to fork over their hard-earned cash to buy your product is to get it in front of them.” Otherwise, market research is all mere guesswork. It gets you more clarity than you would otherwise have,
but it doesn’t mean much until a target customer’s wallet is involved.
Rather than going through the hassle and added investment of actually building out the product and then seeing if there’s a demand, Rule recommends creating a prototype of the product in Photoshop, setting up an ecommerce website and then leaving your payment processing in test mode so that it doesn’t actually charge a potential customer’s credit card for a fictional item.
Then, begin to direct ads to the page to see if customers actually buy. “Personally I would spend around $10,000 on a proper marketing test, but you can start with a lot less if you aren’t comfortable going that high right away,” Rule elaborates in his book. “I do recommend spending at least $1,000 because you want to get enough clicks and conversions for the data to mean something — trust me, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper to lose $1,000 on a marketing test than it is to lose tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars producing a product nobody wants."
Sometimes, the best bets require a smaller upfront investment first for a big payout on the back end.

Engulf yourself into the industry

The more you know about what you’re investing in, the more educated your bets can be, which usually pays off on the back end. This piece of advice comes from sports gambler Zach Hirsch. At 18 years old, Hirsch is regarded as one of the top-performing sports analysts in sports gambling, with a 90 percent accuracy rate in his predictions (which is over 20 percent higher than the industry average).
Hirsch’s best advice on making sound bets is to “engulf yourself in the industry.” For Hirsch, he takes this piece of advice within the type of sport he’s betting on, but the advice carries for business investments, as well. “Learn everything there is to know, engage with the experts, and do whatever it takes to further your understanding of the craft,” Hirsch recommends. This advice can be extended to getting to know the founder of the startup you’re investing in or just ensuring you know as much as you can about your new industry, so you can see clearly how a product or service will perform. Do your backup research, then research some more. Keep having important conversations.
Even with verified demand and a thorough understanding of your industry, there’s no guarantee that your investment is 100 percent safe, but you’ll at least have the perspective to see potential bumps in the road or glaring stop signs in your betting decisions. These insights may make all the difference.

2020.09.29 22:40 That369magic Let me vent real quick

The Bible tells you You are born evil, dirty and sinful. But if you agree that an ancient murder is your fault, the one who loves you most in all the world won't have to torture you for being so evil. This is the most psychologically damaging thing you can say to a child.
My favourite part of the bible is when god gives everyone free will and then drowns everyone for not acting the way he wanted.
God be like: I CREATED MAN AND WOMAN WITH ORIGINAL SIN THEN I DESTROYED MOST OF THEM FOR SINNING THEN I IMPREGNATED A WOMAN WITH MYSELF AS HER CHILD, SO THAT I COULD BE BORN LATER, I WILL KILL MYSELF AS A SACRIFICE TO MYSELF TO SAVE ALL OF YOU FROM THE SIN I GAVE YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE
(Couldn’t he just will himself into existence like he made Adam and Eve?)
God hates adultery
Also god: "I'm gonna impregnate a 14 year old to sacrifice myself to myself to save everyone from myself because i'm not actually omnipotent because if I were I would just forgive everyone"
  1. God is perfect.
  2. God made you in his image.
  3. You are imperfect, even though you were made in the image of an all powerful deity who could have made you any way he chose.
  4. When you predictably fail because of your imperfections, God punishes you.
And then, a thought came across Joseph's mind..
If God created Adam from mud and dust... Couldn't he create his own son instead of fucking my wife?
Proof your God doesn't exist.
  1. Think of a god you DON'T believe in.
  2. Determine which standards of proof
this God does not meet.
  1. Apply that/those standards of proof to your own God.
  2. Wonder why you didn't see it sooner.
Look in the mirror and you'll see him. That's why his opinions are yours. That is why only the parts of the bible you like are true. This is why he knows you so well. He is you - and he only exists in your head.
Love me back 🥺🥰😉✝️ OR ILL SET YOU IN FIRE 🔥
If the person offering you salvation is also the one threatened you with punishment it’s not really salvation, it’s extortion
Prayer Because he already know what you want, He just wants to hear you beg for it
Numbers 31:17-18 So kill all the boys and all the women who have had intercourse with a man. Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves
Ephesians 5:22-23 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife
Luke Luke 12:49 "I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!" -Jesus
Deuteronomy 22:23-24 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man's wife. You must purge the evil from among you.
Proverbs 23:13-14 Withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with the rod, he shall not die. You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from hell.
Samuel 18:25-27 For his daughter's hand in marriage, King Saul wanted no less than one hundred Philistine foreskins. David, really wanting to become a son-in-law to the powerful king, took his men and killed enough Philistines to bring back two hundred foreskins! David counted them all in front of the king. As promised, he was awarded the princess!
God:
Gets upset when people build a tower to reach Heaven... but has no problem with the international space station
I MADE YOU IN MY IMAGE BUT I NEED YOU TO CUT OFF SOME OF YOUR PENIS THOUGH
So Satan is bad And he make you do things god doesn't like But god gets angry and sends you to hell because Satan, who was a powerful angel made by eco god, successfully influenced you Then Satan punishes you in hell for listening to him?
IF TWO MEN ARE FIGHTING, AND THE WIFE OF ONE MAN TRIES TO RESCUE HER HUSBAND BY GRABBING THE OTHER MAN'S PRIVATE PARTS, YOU MUST CUT OFF HER HAND. DON'T HAVE ANY MERCY. DEUTERONOMY 25:11-12
"You're NOTHING without me” "If you even THINK about leaving me. You don't DESERVE me." "You'll never find ANYONE good as me." You brought this upon yourself I know best "You're not WORTHY of my love." Im only doing this because I LOVE you. "Don't listen to ANYONE who doesn't understand what we have You're a TERRIBLE person, and you need me to be better.
-GOD
GOD IS TIRED AND RESTS (EX 31:17) GOD IS NEVER TIRED AND NEVER RESTS (IS 40:28 🤔 😐 😕
Believers be like: I will respect your opinion as long as your opinion doesn't disrespect anyone else's existence.

2020.09.29 22:36 advicethrowaway1059 I'm(23m) about to move in with my long distance GF(22F) convinced shes cheating but don't want to check her phone.

Hey guys, just want to start off by saying this community is great. it's awesome to be able to go online and get real advice about real situations like this. I come here because to put it short, I'm pretty convinced my long distance GF is cheating but I don't want to do anything drastic like check her phone or start questioning her on the chance that she isn't cheating and then I'll have ruined this relationship that I love very much over nothing other than my own insecurity.
A little background, I am 23 and my gf is 22. We have been together 3.5 years now, and in that time we have broken up twice(once because I was just being an impulsive moron, and the second time because we had a small incompatibility that we needed to work through but I instead decided to be an impulsive moron). She makes me extremely fucking happy, and from what everything seems she is exactly the type of person I want to be with forever. She is very kind and caring to me, is absolutely beautiful(seriously a 10/10 i would choose her over any girl at any party ever), and just generally I know that love isn't about finding someone who is exactly like you, but she has everything that I want.
The problem comes with basically this entire time since corona started. We are long distance because after that second time I broke up with her, I actually moved cross country to pursue my music career but I fly to see her or fly her out here almost every month and we facetime every single night(there's only been a few nights we've missed and they were all because I was busy) so obviously that already puts a strain on things but then being long distance on top of that was awful. At first things were going pretty well, but as the pandemic heated up her job got WAY more hectic and she wasn't her normal, easily-cheered self anymore. It was really taking a huge toll on her how much they were working her, her boss was overworking her constantly and still being like "you have to do more you're slipping behind!" literally to the point where after a few months of it she was crying on facetime about how she misses life when she wasn't just going to bed every night sad about how she was going to have to go to this crazy job as soon as she woke up. I stayed supportive the whole time, but I noticed she was a bit distant. At first I wanted to say fuck the pandemic and just get on a plane to come see her, but she was really apprehensive. She still lives with her mom, who was TERRIFIED of getting it and being very adamant so I'm pretty certain it was just that but that was the first thing that seemed off. She would have been so excited for me to come see her before.
She did start doing some other stuff too, like one day out of the blue she tweeted "this ass is an essential service" when she NEVER talks like that on the internet and to me it basically insinuated that despite the pandemic she is still going to go hook up with someone who she is presumably "essential" to. She also posted a pretty revealing picture of her body on snapchat story a few months ago which is also something she never does, she just was never the type of girl to do that before so it seemed kinda shocking. I asked her in a not-horrible way about these and she said the tweet was about how her work is making her keep bringing her ass to work and the photo was just about her feeling beautiful. Again, I'm not trying to make a big thing out of nothing so I accepted that and dropped it but it did feel fishy.
The sex in our relationship seems to have become a lot more dry too, like she never tells me what she wants and really I have to be the one to bring it up almost every time. When we first did see each other after 3 months of quarantine and we had sex, it did feel a bit robotic and since then hasn't been quite as explosive as it once was. All I can think is that I'm not doing it for her at all, she's getting it from someone else who is way better(despite her not fucking telling me what she wants lol) or just some terrible combination of these things that is just compounded by her silence.
She also gets a lot more annoyed at me more easily too which is something I think she's done with everyone, she was recently telling me her mom was really annoying her as well so I think that one is happening to everyone across the board.
This paragraph is where the kicker comes. So she was raised in a very mormon household. Her parents were very loving and supporting of her, but still raised her to be ingrained with that fear of anything that doesn't fit into the mormon rule. She has also told me in the past she wants to have threesomes, and has made comments like "it's just sex" when talking about how she hooked up with this guy in the past while we were broken up so now I'm like... is she just using her patented lying skills? I have aided her in several elaborate lies to her mom and seen her developed ability to make convincing lies when she loves someone and doesn't want to hurt them. Furthermore, I was hurt BAD in my last relationship. Like cheated on multiple times, and I was just a pushover that sat there and let it keep happening. it was fucking awful. I don't want that again, but also I don't want to ruin this awesome relationship when she may not even be doing anything. We're actually about to move in together in the next few weeks, we have an apartment picked out and everything and I feel like it's just inevitable that she's going to move out here, realize she doesn't really love me and then im going to have to deal with the fallout of that. This got set off because the other day I was feeling jealous and looked through who she was following on tiktok(bad I know I know) and noticed there was this one guy who I had not seen before. I clicked on his profile, and sure enough he lives in the same city as her VERY close to her neighborhood. I think she was following him because he had a semi-viral tik tok that had a few million views so I think it was like "hey here's someone with a big video from where I live let me follow them" rather than this being this guy that she's fucking. I looked at his other socials and they don't have any interactions but it still just seems so fishy. The worst part is recently she told me I would look hot with an arm tattoo and sure enough, this guy has one of those generic rose tattoos all up his arm.
This fucking sucks. I really wish she would just go back to being like she was before quarantine and before the work situation happened but I also don't want to keep sitting around like an idiot getting cheated on by another girl I put all this effort into. I'm so fucking tempted to read her phone and see what's happening but 1: I don't really want to read all the intimate details, especially if she's anything like my ex it would probably be that this one guy is just the tip of the iceberg and I'm really just one of a long list of guys she's been smashing and 2: if she isn't doing anything which is still pretty likely, I will have basically just put the nail in the coffin for our relationship and really I wouldn't deserve her in that case. We talk about marriage frequently and are about to move in together and I couldn't be more excited, I just can't get out of my mind that this is maybe going on and by not doing anything I'm just showing more and more that it's okay and that I'm a weak person who can just be stepped on. What do you guys think?

2020.09.29 21:24 XSaraXPoeX Ghosts of Quincy

By Troy Taylor
Located along the banks of the Mississippi River is Quincy, Illinois. The town was started back in 1822 when a settler named John Wood built a cabin here at what is now the foot of Delaware Street. The city grew rapidly, thanks to both river traffic and the railroads. In later years, it became known as the "Jewel of the West" and later, the "Gem City".
Thanks to its rich history, the city is also known for its many ghostly legends and lore. There are said to be a number of haunted houses and sites here, including one of the most famous buildings in the region. The stories say that Villa Kathrine, the only Moorish castle built on the Mississippi, is haunted by Bingo, the Great Dane that was once owned by George Metz, who constructed the house. This four-legged is rumored to still haunt this historic mansion.
There is also said to be a haunted cemetery in the area known as "Ghost Hollow", located south of Quincy. This eerie graveyard is supposedly surrounded by a high stone wall and is filled with crumbling stone crypts. In the center of the burial ground is a black tomb that bears a one-word inscription in Latin. Few are believed to know the exact location of this cemetery and my inquiries into the site were mostly met with silence. The few who did speak about it claimed that "you could hear the sound of whispers and singing" in the place at night.
Also located just outside of the city limits is a housing area known as Harrison Hills, or the "Indian Mounds", as it is sometimes called. According to local legend, the houses here were built directly on some Indian burial sites. Residents still find the occasional arrowhead on the property, not to mention spot the occasional ghost in the surrounding wooded area. Stories say that you can sometimes hear voices chanting in native languages being carried on the wind at night.
Quincy's history during the Civil War has also given birth to several legends. Once such story comes from the fact that the city is located just across the river from Missouri, a state that stayed loyal to the Confederacy during the war. Southern sympathizers and spies often came across the Mississippi and stayed in Quincy. One house that legends say often harbored southerners was the "Old Rebel House", which was located at the corner of Second and Vermont Streets. For many years after the Civil War, locals told of spies and saboteurs who stayed at the house and to add to its reputation, it was also regarded as being haunted.
Beth Scott and Michael Norman's book, "Haunted Heartland", recounts a spooky incident that took place in the house in 1880's. At that time, the Old Rebel House was occupied by a mother and three children who lived on the top floor, while the woman's married daughter and her husband lived downstairs. There was a long balcony on the second floor that stretched from one end of the house to the other and doors opened from this porch into nearly every room. It should also be pointed out that there was no way to gain access to this balcony from outside.
One morning, the mother left for work and placed her daughters in charge of her infant son. Almost as soon as she departed, the two girls began to argue over who got to rock their baby brother's cradle. Suddenly, in the midst of their bickering, a door that led in from the balcony opened up and a sinister-looking man stepped inside. Years later, the two girls would say that the man "looked just like the picture you see of the devil". They simply stared at him as he stumbled across the room and out into the hallway. There was a wooden banister that surrounded the staircase leading down to their sister's apartment and their mother had placed several handmade quilts along the railing. The strange man proceeded to throw the quilts onto the floor, and then he picked them back up again and arranged them differently on the rail. After a moment, he turned and started walking toward the two girls. Before he reached them though, he changed directions and lurched out through the door he had entered through.
The girls didn't waste any time and immediately began screaming, bringing their sister upstairs. They explained to her what had happened and pointed out the door the "devil man" had disappeared through. She walked over but found it locked. Refusing to believe the story, she spanked her sisters, a punishment that was repeated by their mother when she returned from work and heard the odd tale.
In spite of this, the girls maintained that the story was true. Years after the event, when others had encountered their own specters in the Old Rebel House, the doubters were forced to grudgingly admit that there may have been more to the story than they first imagined!
One of the legendary haunted spots is a place called Burton Cave. It is said that on a day back in the 1880's, a group of picnickers spotted a strange and mysterious figure near the mouth of the cave. This person was wearing a long robe with it's hands hidden within the folds and a hood over it s head. The figure vanished but the picnickers moved deeper into the cavern and discovered a woman in a white dress lying prone on a makeshift altar, ritual candles lying all around her.
The party ran for their wagons and returned to the cave in the company of several deputies. When they arrived and went back into the cave, the woman, and the mysterious figure, had vanished... No evidence of the strange encounter was ever found.
Another haunted spot is the site of the Madison Grammar School. A woman was once brutally murdered in the house that stood at this site and her killing was never solved. Residents who moved into the house were unable to remove the bloody evidence of the crime from the oak floorboards. They reported many strange and unexplained sounds in the house from doors opening to that of a body being dragged down the steps. It was not learned until later that the woman who had been killed in the house had been slain on the second floor and her body dragged downstairs and stuffed into a small closet.
Finally, the house was torn down. The school that was built on the site is also believed to be currently haunted and some claim that a mysterious fire that broke out here in 1982, almost destroying the school, was paranormal in origin.
According to a correspondent, Quincy University is also believed to be haunted. Solano Hall on campus, which now holds the school of music, was erected on the site of St. Aloyisius Orphanage, which burned down many years ago. According to the legend, several children were killed in the tragedy. The orphanage was rebuilt and the new building was used to house orphans who survived the fire until it closed down. Quincy University, then known as Quincy College, used the building as a dormitory for football players and then it was turned into the current music building, Solano Hall, named for St. Francis of Solanus, who was a musician. In the years following the fatal fire, strange occurrences have taken place in the building and are believed to be connected to the ghosts of the children killed here years ago. The apparition of a child has been reported in the hallways, running feet are heard in the corridors and screams have been reported by those passing by outside of the building. Others report hearing the sounds of children laughing and playing in the darkened corridors, even though no living children are present.
Across campus is MacHugh Theater, which is located in Francis Hall. This area was once used as a gymnasium but was converted into a theater, a television station and then back to a theater in the 1980's. A theater professor named Hugh "Fitz" Fitzgerald worked to get the theater restarted again, but passed away in 1998. According to campus lore, his spirit now resides in the theater. Students and staff members who are in the building late at night have often reported spotting his presence in the light booth, where he also appears on occasion to watch the performances.
Quincy, Illinois is on the Mississippi River along the western side of the state. Burton Cave is in Adams County and lies four miles east of Quincy. There is a meadow in front of the cave that is still used for picnics. Madison School is located at the comer of 26th Street and Madison Street in Quincy.

2020.09.29 21:23 DXMemoriesofyou Quick 2C-B-FLY report for you guys

Hello, I really appreciate the outpouring of comments I got last night for my silly little question! I'll link the original post in the comments. I just decided to throw together a rough telling of my experience. Usually I would take notes, but I was having too much fun. I'm gonna do a diff report on a diff substance perhaps tonight.. if you guys liked this I can make the next one much more professional.
Last night around 630pm (this is all gonna be a very rough report, I didn't write anything down) I took one 10mg 2C-B-FLY pellet that I got from a place far away. Wasn't trying to go too hard because I was with my girlfriend, and I just didn't want to be a fucking bugged out weirdo in front of her. Thanks to you guys, I felt confident that I could handle it more and more with each comment that you guys gave me. Not sure if this is good or bad, lol. Around an hour later at 730 I felt like I was on MDMA kinda, energetic and good, chillin and having fun talking to my girl but I didn't feel fucked up or tripped out at all and I wasn't seeing much in terms of visuals. So around then I took about half of another pellet, so another 5 mg.
Me and my girl started watching Arrival, with Amy Adams, about the fucking aliens that come or whatever and humans figure out their language and all the weird shit happens (if someone can explain this movie to me, PM please, I'm not joking I have questions about it). Anyway, I was watching it with her, got horny, and we started doing the thing. I feel like this is where the substance really shined. Once we started having sex, I felt like.. primal, visceral. Like sex was my number one drive and I just needed it bad as fuck. I was starting to see visuals when we started having sex, shit started looking weird, I started to momentarily forget what my girl looked like because my vision was getting weird and I was just so focused on the pleasure of sex. We did it for a while and stopped, it was really good. But I feel like my visual input was lagging bc the pleasure of sex was so extreme that it took over all of my senses in a way.
Anyway, we start watching the movie again, and I know within an hour I snorted about 10mg more of another pellet. The burn felt horrible and it was really fucking painful actually, I also can not recommend snorting 2cs. I forgot about the warnings. Let me add a big fat disclaimer here and say: this substance was easy to handle and I did feel confident after asking the opinions of people here, but I was being mad reckless. I wanted more visuals and the headspace was so clear that it was like a a speedy acid without feeling like I was going crazy or having fractal thoughts. But me just casually doing this with a research chemical was not smart. Always be careful with your dosing.
BUT.
Snorting it added much more visuals to the trip. It also hyped up my energy just a bit. We watched the rest of the movie and I was smoking weed too so I was just kinda confused and I guess the 2c made me feel shot out, not all trippy, but I wasn't like "sober headed". Def. not a psychedelic mindset, maybe a little bit, barely. This was like acid with the visuals but no mindfuck and you can easily handle it and it's kinda cool.
Having sex with her after doing more was one of the best experiences of my life, orgasm felt like my soul was being sucked out of me. Again, i felt like while having sex my aura/self/being was just "lagging" in visual stimuli because the pleasureable stimuli was so so so much greater and meaningful. I felt like I couldn't even see when I was having sex with her, and like everything in the world was just meant to be us having sex. Idk, it was super fucking intense.
In conclusion, don't snort it, shit burns. I did 25mg gradually over like 3 hours or so and the whole experience from first drop was like 6-8 hours maybe? I just took an etiz to go to sleep, im sure the visuals would have remained. Next time I do a report I will utilize times.
IMO 2-CB-FLY is like a clear headed acid. The visuals are interesting, nothing super complex that I saw yet. I think it would be boring to do this alone at a dose that wasn't high enough for a lot of psychedelia. I felt sober throughout, and I think I didn't understand the movie because of the weed honestly. With acid, you KNOW it's hitting you. With this, I started at my wall while peeing and all of a sudden my whole bathroom was patterning. Didn't freak me out and I looked away easily, thinking how cool it was. Didn't have super strong visuals but wasn't aiming for it. The sex part was fucking awesome, I wonder how plain 2-CB is if the FLY is so good. That was my favorite part. I also could easily trip, enjoy the fun and myself without my girl worrying about me buggin the fuck out.
I have 25mg left, next time I try, should I just eat it all at once?

Sorry about jumbled report. This one was for y'all.

I owe you all an explanation.
Ben and I had been together for four years before Lillian and Youssef moved in with us. We met in our first year at UM and quickly became inseparable the way that you do when you're young and in love and anxious to be an adult. The longer we were together, the more we realized that we didn't fit.
It was small things at first; disagreements that were unnecessarily heated, overreactions that were too volatile. I hadn't had too many serious relationships before, nor had I lived with anyone, so I chalked them up as normal. Relationship growing pains.
He was never abusive, but I wasn't perfect either. We did complement each other sometimes - he was supportive of me working through my mental health issues, and I always cheered him through his failed hobbies before we realized we were clinging to each other because we were more afraid of being alone.
When he found out about Lil and Youssef, he didn't say anything. Well, negative. He was as supportive of them as he could be while trying not to be involved at all. After they eloped and asked to move in with us, he coldly agreed before complaining later in bed.
"What the fuck is she doing with him anyway? Is she trying to look, like socially conscious or something?"
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Oh come on, you're the one always saying Lillian is all surface. Is she just trying to rock a Muslim husband for the look?"
I couldn't even begin to respond to that. "You're crazy."
Youssef and Lil were quiet and conscientious and very much in love in a time when Ben and I were drifting. I felt like school was a huge mistake and my relationship didn't really make sense anymore. It didn't help that Ben began to weaponize my anxiety against me.
As my health worsened, I stopped working out as much, stopped going out as much, and stopped investing tons of time into my appearance. In retrospect, maybe I was trying to drive Ben away - after all, it was obvious to me that Ben was out of my league. But he wasn't subtle about it, constantly critiquing my drive, my passion, my softening body, my interest in our relationship.
"Sometimes," he would always sigh, "I feel like the only one invested in us anymore."
Our sex life dried up, and he started spending more time doing his own thing, which was fine. But he wouldn't tell me where he was, where he was going, what he was doing, who he was with. I had to stalk Facebook to see him posing with Alpha Chi Omegas at parties that he promised was just him and the guys hanging out.
I spent a lot of time in my room or on the couch when I decided I couldn't stay in there any longer. Lillian was still in classes too, but would try and cut where she could to support me, to be present. Youssef was constantly working on different freelance gigs when he wasn't looking for something full time, so he would often join me in the evenings, either scrolling LinkedIn or coding on his laptop.
"We are victims of a shit economy, huh?"
He had a cute way of talking in really stilted english before slipping in poorly placed slang. It wasn't his first language obviously, but his earnestness made him really funny - whether he intended to be or not.
When Lil was home we tried to spend as much time together as we could - Thursdays were standing girls nights; but I took a distant backseat to her new husband for obvious reasons. On particularly bad days for me Ben almost seemed to manufacture excuses to be out of the house, so I spent a lot of time alone. I filled it with reading, studying, working, texting with acquaintances who I tried unsuccessfully to turn into friends.
I really don't want to talk about this, but you deserve an explanation.
Ben came home drunk one night. He had bombed this Organic Chemistry final and blew off some steam with some friends, or so he said. I was studying when he got home while Youssef worked on something. Lillian was taking one of her evening classes, I think. I don't remember.
Ben made Youssef intensely uncomfortable, especially when he had been drinking. He had this obnoxious way of monopolizing physical space, and his latent dislike of Youssef bubbled to the surface.
He leans over him at the kitchen table, and stares at the code for a moment, then slapped Youssef on the back. His words sloshed around and spilled out of his mouth.
"What're you doing there buddy?"
"Just working on a coding thing - for Evelyn's flowers. Building their website ordering."
"Oh that's cool; you get paid for that right?"
"Yeah."
"That's good," Ben shuffled to the fridge and tossed off with a laugh - "I thought you were building a bomb or something."
I froze on the couch as if someone had poured a bucket of cold water on my head. I felt my mouth hang open as I stared at Ben, who lumbered to the bathroom. Youssef didn't react, his face focused on his laptop before he saw me looking at him. I didn't know what to say. I tried "I'm so sorry."
He gave me a tight smile. It looked warm and genuine. He packed up his things and moved into the second bedroom.
***
If he told Lil, she didn't confront me. Lil had always been tougher than I was. She didn't put up with shit or accept what people told her, not like me. She may not have confronted me, but she would've confronted Ben. But she didn't, so I assumed that Youssef hadn't told her.
It's so strange, looking up to your younger sister, admiring her strength and her confidence. It felt like a betrayal, letting Ben go without talking with him about it. It also felt like a betrayal of my burgeoning friendship with Youssef. I needed to say something.
We spent most of that Saturday together, just doing household shit - clean the bathroom, get groceries, he painted over a red wine spill in the bedroom so we wouldn't lose our damage deposit. He looked good. Happy.
We were working outside in the garden, and had plans to meet some friends afterwards for drinks. I asked casually.
"Hey, can I invite Lil and Youssef along?"
He paused momentarily. It looked like he was trying to find a reason to say No but came up empty.
"Sure, I guess. Does Youssef drink? It might be weird for him."
"I think so. I'll ask Lil."
"That's cool."
"Well, he won't be able to stay at home building bombs, right? You can keep an eye on him."
"What?"
"I said he won't be able to -"
"I heard what you said. Why the fuck would you say that?"
"That's what you said, last week when you came home after your final. You accused him of building bombs on his laptop."
"My Chem final?" I nodded. "I don't remember saying that. I was drunk, Mel."
"You still said it. You probably should apologize to him. You should apologize to him."
"I don't remember saying anything. And if I apologized now it would just make things even more awkward. Anyway, fuck, why should I?"
"Because it's the right thing to do."
"This is such bullshit. It was a joke, and I think I've been super accommodating." His face wrinkled in pity and disgust. "You always do this - you bend over backwards for other people all the time, and you're doing it for Lillian and her newest flavor of the month because that's what you do."
"He's not a flavor of the month Ben. They're married."
"You're the one always saying that she's rash and impulsive, she'll change her mind. And fuck it, people like him shouldn't even be here."
That was the first time we broke up. He didn't move out, but started crashing with one of his buddies. Lil and Youssef took me out for dinner as she comforted me and told me I'd done the right thing. She didn't know what Ben had said or done, but confidently stated that if he made me that upset, then he wasn't worth the heartbreak anyway.
Youssef understood, even though he didn't say it. After Lil went to bed that night he knocked on my door. "If you ever need anything, please tell me." I gave him a hug. It felt good. His fingers felt strong and his arms felt safe.
Ben and I made up a week later. Lil was already intent on being cold towards him, and when she found out what precipitated the fight she almost lost her shit. I heard Youssef talking her down through the walls while Ben was taking a shower.
"That fucking creep! He can't fucking say shit like that - it's this fucking state, full of these small minded people who think they can say whatever they want -"
"I understand your anger Lillian, I feel it too. It hurts, but it's nothing I haven't heard before."
"You shouldn't have to go through that! It's not fair!"
"Thank you, but remember, this is for Melanie. He makes her happy, and her being happy makes you happy, and that's all I want."
I heard them having sex after Ben fell asleep.
It wasn’t the first time I’ve heard Lil having sex. She used to sneak guys into the basement after Mom and Dad went to bed. It always grossed me out, the thought of my sister - my baby sister - being a few feet away, doing that.
This time, though, I wasn’t thinking of her.
My left hand slid over my thigh as Youssef’s muffled grunts crept through the wall, my eyes fixed on Ben, making sure he was asleep. I heard him make Lil feel loved, feel whole. I wanted to feel that way.
I really don't want to talk about this.
***
Ben and I didn't resolve our differences so much as we danced around them, avoiding conversations, floating around each other like we both innately knew the choreography. He never apologized to Youssef or Lillian, and I think he felt the energy in the house turn against him even before he asked me to ask Lil to move out.
"I don't like feeling like I'm a leper in my own home Mel. This isn't about choosing me or choosing her. I'm asking whether you want to prioritize our relationship or not."
He was right in a way. If I did truly want to be with him, I had to make a choice. I didn't know how to broach the subject with Youssef and Lil. Ben was willing to give me the opportunity to speak to them, and when I asked for it, he gave me the space I needed. To find the right time.
***
I knew Lil wasn't going to be home when I got back after classes, but I wasn't expecting Youssef to have beaten me there, or for him to be in the kitchen, or for the heavenly smell. He met me with a smile that seemed larger than any I'd ever seen and gestured for me to take a seat.
"Have you ever had kumpir?"
I hadn't, and he grinned.
"It's like a baked potato, which I know you like.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah, very easy to make. You can buy it from the street vendors in Istanbul. Whenever we’d visit the big city, my Anne - my mother, she would let me choose whatever toppings I wanted - beets, pickled cabbage, mushrooms, I used to love kasseri.”
“What’s that? Kas-kasseri?” I stumbled over the word, but he pressed on, cresting on some wave of remembrance and adorable enthusiasm.
“Yes! Very good! Kasseri, it’s cheese you make from sheep’s milk. Very rich, creamy, you can shred it like parmesan and bake it on top of the potato. I got some from a Turkish store on the way home. I’m so excited for you to try it!”
I could see he’d been at work, two cutting boards were buried on the counter under a kaleidoscope of vegetables and cheeses of different colors. Roasted peppers sprinkled with peppers and paprika glistened in trays on the stove and the oven glowed, warm, like a fireplace in a Hallmark movie. Youssef pulled out a bottle of white wine and two glasses, pouring one for both of us - I guess that answered the question of whether he drank or not.
“I’m not familiar with wines - we don’t really do that in my family. So I Googled a good pairing for baked potatoes - I thought a Riesling would be nice.”
I was stunned. “I love Riesling.”
Youssef smiled mischievously, his eyes sparkling. “I know, I saw your wine collection when we moved in.”
My skin began to itch and flushed hot. “I don’t know what to say. Thank you, this is so lovely.”
“Don’t thank me yet! You have to try it first! If you like it, you can thank me again. If you don’t, just pretend you did, okay?” He laughed, his voice rich and dark like polished wood.
Why am I so fucking stupid?
I laughed too, and promised to lie, but I didn’t need to.
I can’t say I am or was an adventurous eater, but compared to the potatoes with sour cream and chives I loved growing up, this was something else. When he pulled the kumpir out of the oven he used two forks to pull the soft skin of the potato apart like a book, the array of colors gleamed as the spice-scented steam wafted off of the plate. It was delicious, and the wine paired perfect as we talked and moved to the couch, plates balanced on our laps with morsels. Youssef used a knife and fork, but excused himself to eat the last few morsels with his fingers.
“When you cook, the flavors seep into your skin, the smoke, the oil, the spray of the onions - so when you eat with your hands it becomes a complete experience.”
I took in the sight of him. His pale skin was tinged with a Mediterranean glow, his cheekbones sharp and leading to his soft brown eyes that shimmered like pools. His fingers - thick and strong - delivered the last few morsels and he smiled at me as he chewed. I realized that I hadn’t taken a deep breath in a while. What had I wanted to say?
“Thank you so much for dinner Youssef, this was...it was wonderful.”
“It’s not a problem. I...I..wanted to thank you.”
I felt warm, my skin flushed and for a second was terrified that I was sweating.
“For what?”
“Well, I wanted to thank you and Ben. For everything you’ve done for us - you’ve been so good to let us stay with you. I know it has been...difficult.” He took a deep breath before continuing.
“I also know that Ben...has not been happy with us here. I’m sorry that we, that we have imposed on your hospitality for so long. It isn’t right, for us to be have been such a burden.”
I felt this pale, distant buzzing in my head, the sound a fly makes trapped between the blinds and the window. I shook my head to clear it, but Youssef held up a hand, taking my reaction for disagreeing with him.
“No, you don’t need to be so nice. You’ve always been so nice. And I am grateful for your…”
He tailed off, his eyes studying mine, enveloping me with his gaze as his hand reached out and took mine.
"Ben didn't mean it, I'm sure, he just," I didn't know how to finish that sentence, so I told the truth instead; "I'm sorry, you didn't deserve that. You're an amazing person, and you've made us so happy since you've come into our lives. We are so lucky."
He shook his head.
“I'm the lucky one. I am blessed that you supported me. You and your sister are good people."
Him bringing Lil up cut sharply and I wheezed for a moment, feeling guilty. He didn't seem to notice my reaction though, and stared at the plate. I touched his arm and his head snapped up, as though he'd been lost in thought. "Are you okay Youssef?"
He nodded, and I could see his eyes shimmered with tears.
"What's wrong?"
He laughed sadly.
"It is difficult, being an immigrant in this country; there are so many wonderful people here, like you and Lillian, but there are so many people here who think the worst of people like me despite knowing nothing about us. They don’t know about us, about our dreams and passions and visions for the future. They see the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the God we pray to and think that they know everything about us.”
I began feeling nauseous, my stomach rolling in waves. The lights felt too bright, the air too humid. The only thing I felt with perfect clarity were Youssef’s hands sheltering mine, throbbing with warmth, his heartbeat trembling along the veins snaking down his muscular arms. I think he mistook my silence for anger, and quickly tried to reassure me.
"I'm sorry, I'm not trying to accuse you or Ben of anything, please don't be angry. I am genuinely grateful, and I hope that he and I can be friends."
I tried to speak, but felt my voice catching in my throat. I could hear my voice but it sounded alien and distant, my thoughts clattered around my head like marbles.
“There’s no need to thank us, Lillian is my sister and I love you, I mean, she loves you.”
My throat felt tight and I struggled with, what did I say? Did I, fuck, oh no -
"What?"
Shit. Oh shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit -
"Nothing, I'm sorry, I just, I think it's the wine? I'm, sorry, just…"
I tried to get up, but my legs felt like fresh concrete and I stumbled, my plate and fork tumbling to the carpet as I fell back onto the couch where he caught me. His cheek filled the palm of my hand, cool and rough, the skin tightening under my fingers and my gaze.
I felt his lips on mine then, soft and anxious, insistent. I felt his fingers run through my hair as he cupped the back of my head and leaned me back before the sensations drifted away in the dark as I saw him unbutton my blouse and run his hands along my skin but I didn’t feel it.
I didn't feel anything as our hands and lips explored each other, even as he carried me to their bedroom, where I'd hear him and Lil. I didn't feel anything even as I saw him push himself inside of me. It felt like I was watching two people from afar, even as I saw myself lean my head back, gasping towards the ceiling…
I need to stop.
***
One of the things I have worked on - a lot - with my Therapist is a willingness to confront myself. To accept things about myself that I don’t want to - faults, shortcomings, flabby arms and mediocrity. To ignore that little voice in my head that follows me like a conscience, that tears me down and degrades me until I lie to myself. To create fantasies of the person I wish I could be, that I could have been in moments where I could have made a choice to be someone else. But no matter how much I tell myself that I am who I am and I don’t have to justify myself to anyone, it’s hard not to want to embrace a fiction of a better person, a kinder person, a softer person. The person who I want to be with Adam. To be for Adam.
There’s no point doing any of this, telling all of you this story, if I’m just going to lie again.
Fuck, I really don’t want to talk about this.
I knew what I was doing. Youssef didn’t do anything to me that I didn’t want to. That I didn’t make him want to do.
I stumbled over my words because I meant to. I fell on to him because I wanted to. I kissed him and took him because I needed to. And I guided him to his and Lillian’s bed because I wanted to be his where she was.
Making those choices in that moment didn’t make me a better person, but they made me feel alive - to be wanted, and to make the choice to take. To make the choice to pour Youssef just a little more wine. I chose to be the person who I wanted to be in that moment. It made me feel empowered.
But it didn’t quiet the shame I felt.
I felt it sharply the next morning over breakfast, when all four of us were around the same table, eating the leftovers from the night before. Youssef looked at me with eyes rimmed with anguish and exhaustion - a color that he excused to Lillian as not feeling well after having gotten drunk the night before.
The shame didn't subside when he anxiously avoided me the next evening when we both were home alone. He practically ran to their room when I walked through the door after classes. I heard him talking to himself in choked sobs, and, I think, praying. It sounded like Arabic. I wanted to apologize, but there wasn't anything to say. I wasn't sorry I'd done it.
It almost felt like a relief when I asked Lil to leave later that night and made Ben the bad guy.
She had been worried about me - worried that I was letting Ben back into my life too easily - before giving herself to anger. Anger that I was choosing to stay with someone who had so carelessly treated me and spoken so poorly of her husband. By Friday they were packing to leave and I begged her forgiveness while Youssef was shoving bags into their car, but it wasn’t for what I should have been apologizing for.
Ben was happy they were gone but it felt hollow, tinged with shame after the icy cold goodbye from Lillian and the nervous, darting eyes that Youssef gave him. He hugged me as their car chugged down the street and thanked me “for prioritizing us and our happiness” and lavished me with my favorite takeout and movies and snuggle sessions on the couch. But it all felt so hollow. My conscience gnawed on me as he kissed my neck on the same couch where Youssef had, when I shopped for groceries, when I studied in coffee shops, when I stocked shelves at work.
I broke up with Ben and our lease two weeks later and moved back in with Mom and Dad to finish the school year before we got word from Lil that she and Youssef had found their place in Chanhassen. I didn’t answer her texts or return her calls, because thinking of her made me think of Youssef, which made me think of what I’d done, which filled my stomach with bile and oil and made me retch. I wanted to apologize, but didn’t know how. Telling her would ruin their relationship and her marriage. And Youssef didn't deserve to lose her. Knowing what I know now, I’m so fucking sorry Lil, I wish I’d had the balls to tell you.
A lot of support groups for people who’ve lost family members say that it’s normal to cling to old messages, old memories. Revisiting totems allows you to time travel back to when things were better, when you still had your loved one in your life. Whether things were good, or weren’t, revisiting memories creates this tether between you and the person you lost that overpowers the memories you wish you could forget.
When Lil and Youssef vanished, Mom would obsess over that final Facebook update. She clung to the cheeriness and hope that shone through. Lil’s page became her shrine to her lost daughter.
For me, it was the text. The one that I read while half awake and hurriedly deleted thirty seconds later. One that I never told the police or my parents or DHS about. One that I kept repeating in my head and only started to fade after I met Adam.
Dear Mel,
I've thought a lot about that night; how unfair it was of me to take you and use you like that in a moment where you needed me to be something more for you than I was capable of being. I want you to know that I'm sorry - I'm so sorry. Please forgive me.
Youssef."
I'm going to finish this now.

2020.09.29 20:21 Throwitawaykthxbai Dating my [33M] friend’s ex [28F], who is also my friend.

Hi all. I (33m) am seeing my friend’s ex-girlfriend (28f). Recently, they broke up after she found out he was cheating. From the second she found out, she was adamant that there was no chance at all that she would ever go back.
Long story short, I am her best friend, the guy who she called immediately after she found out her bf was texting other women. I know her as much as I know him, but it’s a different kind of friendship. I am closer to her than I am to him but we share the same circle of friends. Having said that, me and him aren’t the best of friends. I’ve known both of them for about 3 years now.
Me and her spent all of the days after they broke up together, listening to her, having deep discussions next to the sea, and we had fun. I was being the good friend she needed. Things escalated a bit and 3 weeks after their breakup, we made out.
I really like her and we really vibe. I secretly liked her since I got to know her, but never looked at her in that way. I believe she is a great girl, someone I could build a future with. We share the same passions and I really would like to give this a shot. She also looks really really happy to be around me.
However, her ex is nowhere close to moving on. He wants her back despite him cheating on her “for more than 2 years”. He’s been calling her crying and chatting with her to see what she’s doing and why she doesn’t want him back.
Am I an asshole to pursue something more with her? Should I back off?

2020.09.29 19:37 User18940505 An exhaustive list of intriguing and unsolved murders

Now, I must confess, I’m really not sure how much use this will prove to be, primarily because I haven’t included any information on any cases besides the victim’s name (or alias, in some instances). There are two main reasons for this - the first is that this list, like the title surmises, is very long, and I’m not actually sure of the character limit on Reddit (or even if one exists). The other is that I personally enjoy conducting research myself, rather than having someone else do it for me, purely out of self-fulfilment and learned interest. So, I apologise to those who would’ve been satisfied with brief summaries of each case, as this post may not be for you.
Over the next couple days, I will be making two more posts, one concerning disappearances, and the other deaths.
Three quick disclaimers - although I’m not especially new to Reddit, I’m fairly poor when it comes to laying out my posts, so I apologise in advance. In addition to this, whilst the cases are categorised into decades, and some are in chronological order, others are not. This came from using multiple sources. Again, I am very sorry. Finally, the overwhelming majority of these are classed as homicides, but there may be a couple that are legally questionable.
Thank you guys! I will be linking a couple websites at the bottom, but these cases are simply to get you started, so feel free to use any sources you wish. Just hoping I didn’t miss any major ones.

2020.09.29 17:22 throwaway2453112 Everyone has an opinion on my baby’s LAST name and I’m so done with it

Ok so this started before I even got pregnant because I didn’t change my name when I got married. So everyone thought it was appropriate to talk to me about what last name my future children would have. But now that I’m actually having a real baby it’s happening more.
I am adamant that my children have MY last name as part of their name. They are just as much mine as they are my husband’s, after all. My husband is also on board (he prefers everyone to have his name, including me, but that isn’t compatible with what I want). So we’ve agreed on hyphenating.
We’re also agreed that my name will come first. That’s because his name ends with the same vowel that my name starts with, so there’s a weird double vowel situation with his name first. Also they are BOTH part of the last name so it doesn’t matter which is first. Just what sounds better.
Anyway, I was hanging out with one of my friends over the weekend and she starts telling me that his name should come first because it would make an alliteration with the first name we’ve chosen if the baby is a girl. Ok? Thanks for your opinion but no? She also has previously told me I should combine our two names into a horrible dumb sounding name and she constantly uses that dumb name to refer to us and our future children.
My MIL has told me I should use my name as a middle name and just give the baby his last name and that the middle name is just as important. Again, no thanks? If a middle name was just as important as a last name then how come I don’t even KNOW what her middle name is? Also she is divorced/remarried so she doesn’t even have the same last name as my husband anyway.
Other people have told me hyphens are too confusing and to just use my name as a middle name. But for some reason no one has suggested using my husband’s last name as the middle name for that reason. Curious. I’ve known many people with hyphenated last names and I’ve never been confused by it. I’m cautiously optimistic that my child will be smart enough to understand “mom’s name + dad’s name = my name”.
People have even told me not to do it because it will make it too hard for my kid to figure out what to name THEIR KID when they have one. Are you kidding me??? Not my problem. They’ll be an adult! They can do whatever they want, including change their last name if they really hate it. Imagine thinking I have any say in what my child will name THEIR own child (that might not ever exist) DECADES from now.
Not that I even need to justify it, but our names also hyphenate together well. They are names from the same root language so it doesn’t sound weird at all. Also we’re planning to refer to the baby’s name as the initials of the two names in non-official situations, which makes it a really sweet short name. I have a friend who casually goes by the initials of her two last names as her “last name” and I like that system a lot. I.E. Sarah John-Smith = Sarah J.S. (not real name).
I have no problem sharing our first name choices with people and everyone has really liked them and not said anything negative. I didn’t expect so many opinions on the last name. It’s not your baby, it’s not your name. Leave me alone!

Apparently my posts need body to posted so hears the bee movie script
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Ooming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Oan you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs. Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! I got a thing going here. - You got lint on your fuzz. - Ow! That's me! - Wave to us! We'll be in row 118,000. - Bye! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. - Hear about Frankie? - Yeah. - You going to the funeral? - No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. That's why we don't need vacations. Boy, quite a bit of pomp... under the circumstances. - Well, Adam, today we are men. - We are! - Bee-men. - Amen! Hallelujah! Students, faculty, distinguished bees, please welcome Dean Buzzwell. Welcome, New Hive Oity graduating class of... ...9:15. That concludes our ceremonies. And begins your career at Honex Industries! Will we pick ourjob today? I heard it's just orientation. Heads up! Here we go. Keep your hands and antennas inside the tram at all times. - Wonder what it'll be like? - A little scary. Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to the hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... Honey! - That girl was hot. - She's my cousin! - She is? - Yes, we're all cousins. - Right. You're right. - At Honex, we constantly strive to improve every aspect of bee existence. These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. - What do you think he makes? - Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. - What does that do? - Oatches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it. Saves us millions. Oan anyone work on the Krelman? Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones. But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot. But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life. The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that. What's the difference? You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years. So you'll just work us to death? We'll sure try. Wow! That blew my mind! "What's the difference?" How can you say that? One job forever? That's an insane choice to have to make. I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life. But, Adam, how could they never have told us that? Why would you question anything? We're bees. We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth. You ever think maybe things work a little too well here? Like what? Give me one example. I don't know. But you know what I'm talking about. Please clear the gate. Royal Nectar Force on approach. Wait a second. Oheck it out. - Hey, those are Pollen Jocks! - Wow. I've never seen them this close. They know what it's like outside the hive. Yeah, but some don't come back. - Hey, Jocks! - Hi, Jocks! You guys did great! You're monsters! You're sky freaks! I love it! I love it! - I wonder where they were. - I don't know. Their day's not planned. Outside the hive, flying who knows where, doing who knows what. You can'tjust decide to be a Pollen Jock. You have to be bred for that. Right. Look. That's more pollen than you and I will see in a lifetime. It's just a status symbol. Bees make too much of it. Perhaps. Unless you're wearing it and the ladies see you wearing it. Those ladies? Aren't they our cousins too? Distant. Distant. Look at these two. - Oouple of Hive Harrys. - Let's have fun with them. It must be dangerous being a Pollen Jock. Yeah. Once a bear pinned me against a mushroom! He had a paw on my throat, and with the other, he was slapping me! - Oh, my! - I never thought I'd knock him out. What were you doing during this? Trying to alert the authorities. I can autograph that. A little gusty out there today, wasn't it, comrades? Yeah. Gusty. We're hitting a sunflower patch six miles from here tomorrow.
